Whether a/b/g stations actually get increased range has specifically to do with whether STBC is supported in the 802.11n chipset of the AP vendor.

if I set an 802.11n access point to a 40Mhz channel, how can an 802.11g client connect? Will the access point use only the primary 20Mhz channel to talk to the 802.11g client, and use 40Mhz when it knows it's talking to 802.11n clients?
thank you. -
That's correct.
