    A non-recent non-ERP device certainly will not make use of the ERP IE. An up to date non-ERP station *could* still read as it would be required to be transmitted at a basic rate for the BSS (one that all associated STAs can understand).

    In reading my post the last line was misleading that implied all STAs are going to look at the ERP IE. Older ones won't have a clue what it is. Because the short/long preambles were standardized/cleaned up in 802.11g this is where the status presides as I understand it.

    Now, regarding the question in this thread, aren't the bits reversed in the preamble? However, the issue still prevails on how the older non-ERP station has implemented it's short/long preamble interopability.

    I've seen this in older networks where the short preambles were set at the AP and some clients just couldn't associate to the BSS at all because it wasn't capable of short.
