Hi, just out of curiosity, In the Sybex CWSP official study guide there is an indication of SSL being used here, why wouldn't one use a VPN? Any benefits to VPN or disadvantage, I guess performance. Anything else?

Also, in Regard to the Authenticator and Authentication Server, if using port 1812 and 1813 for authentication and auditing, respectively, would 1812 and 1813 also be set on both the Authenticator AND the RADIUS server like the SECRET Key? Or does it only reside on the Authenticator?

  • It would not be prudent to use VPNs for several across the globe, 'always on' connections. The overhead and extra servers and cost would be prohibitive for a relatively simple data ckt. VPNs are generally for temporary high bandwidth connections. So a dedicated, 'always on', low bandwidth line is all that would be needed. Security would be adequately provided by the SSL over a HTTPS connection.

And UDP ports 1812 and 1813 would have to be configured on the Radius server.

  • Thank you.
