I don't think this is necessarily overkill. I actually learned my networking basics from doing the CCNA course during college. They do a great job of teaching you what's what (at least they did when I took it). That being said, I literally haven't touched a Cisco switch/router since I took the course.

So, I'd say, if you have any thoughts of working on Cisco gear then CCNA will teach you networking basics + Cisco switching and routing (again, the course may have changed since I took it).
