Yep, GTHill is correct. The detection signature senses if the device is PoE capable by measuring the resistance on that signal, usually 15-33KOhms. The classification tells the Injector (or PoE capable switch) how much power is required by that device.
In practice, you can sometimes tell the vendor of the PoE devices by the detection signature resistance reading but as you can see, it is not as unique to the vendor as say a MAC address, etc.
