I too use the football analogy, and it helps with visualization, but  you've got to get to at least a little bit of math to talk about the 'why' question about Fresnel Zones... Or just leave it at the visualization and quit while you're ahead.

Sometimes things in RF aren't easily taught/explained to folks. Analogies work and can convey a bulk of the meaning, and so we normally stop there. But to *really* understand, for that you've got to get into the nitty-gritty details. (yep, that usually means more math)
