  • Bryan,

I've been teaching a three-day advanced Wireless Network Design course for the last couple of years. Over 200 people have gone through the process - learning to design, design, design.

A critical part of a Wireless Design is the on-site survey portion.

Just like using a Fluke LANmeter to prove Cat6 cable, a Site Survey should 'prove' your wireless network meets ALL the design specs.

Meeting RSSI alone is like twisted pair copper meeting a 'connectivity' test. Crucial, critical, but not nearly sufficient.

We need to make sure our Wireless networks meet the rest of the design specs the vendor client devices demand.

I've been building a 'master' list of design specs. Currently over 50 specific criteria detailed so far. Different specs for Vocera, Pango, AeroScout, Cisco VoIP, Spectrlink, Ascom, Symbol, etc.

They all start with RSSI... but add many more detailed requirements. It's those 'extra' requirements that make or break the perception of the wireless LAN 'working'.

  • So the next question is where and when do you teach your classes? They sound interesting.

    David
