modulation vs. encoding

I am a bit unclear as to which of the various terms would be called encoding schemes and which are modulation schemes. The 4th edition book is not extremely clear on this topic, and I have missed some questions in the practice test on this topic.
For example is CCK encoding or modulation?
Is PSK encoding or modulation?
are OFDM, fhss, dsss encoding or modulation?
I am two days away from the exam!
thanks for your help. -
CCK = Encoding
PSK = Modulation
OFDM,fhss,dsss = Modulation
Modulation is something when you change the characteristics(amplitude,frequency or phase) of a carrier wave to represent your data.
Encoding is just a way to change a data to a different form.It has nothing to do with the inherent core data present.That is it does not change the data as in modulation but converts into some other format for transmission.
Hope this helps.

If encoding is performed, it goes like this...
Raw data - encode - modulate - Transmit >---
---> Receive - demodulate - decode - raw data
encoding modifies the digital data in a way that allows more data to be transmitted in less time. It takes digital data in, and puts modified digital data out.
