In your last paragraph which includes,
"It does not however limit how far the RF travels."
you seem to be implying that there are disadvantages to the approach of disabling the lower data rates (since this obviously has no effect on RF propagation).
I'm not clear what those disadvantages are ... could you please annunciate them?
