I recently ran into an issue while troubleshooting a wireless lan. I turned on my free OmniPeek Personal Sniffer and saw that a network called "Free Public" Wifi" was transmitting. I was in a new city and was not sure if they indeed had implemented some type of free wireless, so I made a note of it. When I tried to track down where the originating signal was coming from, I found that it was a consultant sitting about 20 feet from me. Why was his laptop broadcasting "Free Public Wifi"?

Initial inquiries did not lead me to a good answer, so I filed in my head to be used later. Well that was a few months ago and, thanks to an article by Paul Rubens (not the pee wee herman one), there is a patch out now.

That has been a problem for many years with the Microsoft WZC supplicant. There is even a hacking toy called "HotSpotter" that specifically attacks this flaw.

There are a dozen reasons that to use the WZC service and the DOD mandates that the sucker be disabled.
