Bought a cheap AIR-AP1220-E-K9 from EBay plus an AIR-MP21G-J-K9-A radio module.

Converted it from VxWorks to IOS, works fine with the 'b' radio. Put my 802.11g radio in to replace the 'b' radio....no good. Tried upgrading IOS.....no good. Downgraded it....still no good. Tried 4 different IOS versions but still no joy and the same message about the radio firmware not being present. Older versions show 802.11b on the GUI and later versions show 802.11g. Not sure if that means that the radio is being identified as such.

Here's the messages I get as the AP boots. Get the same message for each of the versions of IOS...e.g.

So I see these firmware image files and the one my AP is looking for ain't there for some reason. So I am wondering a) why isn't there? b) why is my machine looking for it? c) if I could locate this 5501.img file from somewhere and I tftp it on will it work? Trawled the internet and Cisco site but can't locate the file.

My AP is a 1220B-E-K9, whereas the radio is an AIR-MP21G-J-K9-A. Can't find anything that says you can't do that but equally that you can, but I am wondering whether E is European, J is Japan and perhaps this has something to do with it?

Anyone any ideas?

Could you please check the radio sticker? Please make sure it does not say AIR-MP21G-A-K9-B as this is the radio for the 1310 wireless bridge. I have seen this issue before and the IOS of the 1200 series do not support the 1310's radio and that's why it fails.

Definitely says AIR-MP21G-J-K9-A on the sticker. The guys I bought it from have kindly offered to swap it for a AIR-MP21G-E-K9-A so I'll see if that makes a difference. Thanks Roger.

I just found this thread from back in March. It is the only place on the entire Internet where the "B" revision of this radio is mentioned, that I could find anyway.

I just wanted to let you know that your comment gave me the insight I needed to fix my problem. I bought 11 (yes, eleven) of these "B" revisions almost a year ago now by mistake.

I tried everything to get them to work, not realizing that they only work with the 1310 base station. I didn't even notice the "B" at the end of the model no. Tried multiple firmwares, multiple APs, multiple radios, and multiple curse-words. :-//

Tonight, I was giving it another go and watching the console output when I noticed that the AP was looking for the 5501.img firmware file for that radio. I had noticed this before, but never thought much about it, other than "Darn, it just isn't there."

Following your lead that the radios are meant for the 1310 bridges, I downloaded the firmware for the 1310 from Cisco's website, used WinRAR to unzip it, and, lo and behold, 5501.img was in the package!

So, I used TFTP from the console to copy the file to the appropriate location (flash:/firmware_name_folder/), and my 1200 series AP is now working at 54Mbps with the AIR-MP21G-A-K9-B radio. :D

Haven't tried the 1100 yet, but since there's no console, I'll have to telnet in.

Pardon, mais je ne parle pas bien francais :(

Si vous avez installais IOS software, c'est impossible a retourner a VxWorks.

Si non, il fait que vous employez le "console", appoyez "<ctrl> + W" quand vous voyez "bootstrap version", et employez "Xmodem" a installer VxWorks.

I have one of the B cards. I have stumbled on this post. Waldo, I was wondering if you can tell me the IOS version you found this in. I have downloaded several of the version and they have either 5000.img or 6500.img in them. Thanks.

It's in the IOS firmware for the 1300 series bridges.

Download that, then use WinRAR (www.rarlabs.com) to extract 5501.img to your computer, then use TFTP to transfer it to the appropriate folder on your 1100 or 1200 series AP.

This method works for an AP1230B also. I had mistakenly purchased the 'B' version of the card for an upgrade and had the same ...5501.img error message until finding this thread. The 5501.img file from the 1310 bridge works perfectly. Thanks for the tip!
