How can we determine the Acceptance Level for WLAN Signal???

One of my friend is saying if all the survey points have the Signal not less than -75dB then the area will have good coverage.

Is it correct? Or is there anything else we should use to determine the WLAN signal level of acceptance???

Hi Kajenveluppillai,

It depends on several different factors. The first thing is what is your receiver sensitivity and what data rate are you trying to achieve. You might be able to open the receiver with a signal as low as -94 dBm but only transmit with a data rate of 1 Mbps. With the very same system if you want to transmit a data rate of 54 Mbps you might have to boost you signal so that your RSSI is -71dBm.

It?¡é?€??s all in the SOM (system operating margin), received signal minus the receiver sensitivity.

I don?¡é?€??t think you can use any standard figure for all application. Even a value given as a rule of thumb would have to change with your desired data rate.

And don?¡é?€??t forget your fade margin, 10 to 20 dB above the receiver sensitivity and again you have got to consider the desired data rate.
