passive gain

  • I was thinking about this and I agree with GT. Range and coverage are not common antenna characteristics. Frequency, power, radiation pattern, and gain are more measurable variables.

IMO, radiation pattern is what coverage references. I have seen where coverage has been described as percentage of area or volume around the antenna that is covered by a certain gain percentage as well.

I like the WiKi definition of passive gain.

I also would like to humbly submit that coverage is not affected by a power increase from an amplifier. The radiation pattern is reshaped/re-focused when the passive gain is changed.

This next link is to a fellow amateur radio operator?¡é?€??s gain experiments and might be of interest.

Range is another interesting topic and one that is not officially used when defining antenna characteristics. The reason being is that there are too many outside influences that can affect the results. So what typically is used is again the radiation patterns, from those one can extrapolate what the range increase might be and in what direction. But when applied to real conditions, all variables are affected by the surroundings.
