There is a degree of latency inherent in BroadbandAccess so it's possible that there is enough latency to cause those apps to timeout. If it works sometimes and not others, it could just be that either Verizon's network is busy or the company's VPN gateway is overloaded. The problems you're talking about do sound like applications timeouts.
