Can someone elaborate on the following situation:
Pre 8/31/00 rules:
At least 75 of the 79 frequencies must be used in a hop sequence in 1Mhz increments. max output = 1 watt
Post 8/31 rules:
only 15 hops in a set were required. if fewer than 75 were used, max output = 125 mw. maximum of 5 MHz of carrier freq. bandwith.
My question:
How can you achieve 15 hops @ 1 mHZ increments if you can only use 5 MHz max?
Example:
Start hop sequence @ 2.402 GHz
2nd hop = 2.403
3rd hop = 2.404
4th hop = 2.405
5th hop = 2.406
What frequency can it hop to next since the max of 5MHz is used, but only 5 of the 15 mandatory hops are used? -
The Hop Pattern is not sequential. The old rules required a minimum of 75 hops. The lower hop count increases the dwell time and thus the through put. It also reduces the resistance to narrow band interference, trade offs. The new rules require a minimum of only 15 hops. To do this you must use lower power to reduce any interference with neighboring systems. The math is the Channel Bandwidth multiplied by the number of hops is required to equal at least 75. Example: 5 MHz x 15 = 75 (new rules) or 1 MHz x 75 = 75 (old Rules). You can hop more if needed. The 802.11 standard requires at least 6 MHz of seperation between the hops. So going from one to another in order would violate the standard.
Sorting through this can make you hopping mad!!!!!
You may wish to read through pages 176-185 in the CWNA study guide 3rd ed. -
Bandwidth of 5Mhz means that the center frequencies should also be 5 Mhz seperate in order to avoid interference. Like this we can have 15 different center frequencies or 15 hops. Thus theoritically 15 colocated systems are possible.

Still confused...can someone supply a hopping pattern by giving the frequencies ( 15 hops using a maximum of 5 Mhz)
Should it look like this?
Start Hop 1
2.402
2.403
2.404 - center
2.405
2.406
End Hop 1
Start hop 2
2.407
2.408
2.409 - center
2.410
2.411
End hop 2
Start hop 3
2.412
2.413
2.414 - center
2.415
2.416
End hop 3
Start hop 4
2.417
2.418
2.419 - center
2.420
and so on?
