I'd say the new mandated use of TPC and DFS on new spectrum allocation is the savior of unlicensed technology! Its true impact will only be felt in a few years. Without this, you have an unmanaged RF soup that isn't manageable or doesn't scale as things get crowded.
It's a key item that will allow WiFi (and unlicensed mobile WiMAX) scale to larger metropolitan aka metro mireless aka municipal wireless networks.
The other key item missing new NLOS friendly spectrum (sub 3 GHz) with TPC/DFS mandated. Imagine 300-500 MHz worth of unlicensed spectrum below 2 GHz managed with TPC and DFS. Combine this with:
- pico cells enabled with muniwireless deployments.
- MIMO and intelligent antennas.
- ability for higher power.
..We are still at the infancy of high speed wireless data...
Kudos to the folks at FCC (and other regulatory bodies) on this significant improvement and kudos to CWNP for keeping up with all this changing technology. As the "low end" WiFi areas starts to move up to the cellular wireless "territory", it's critical to be able to build up the knowledge base and competence. The addition of Wireless# for example is great.
