I'll read the rest of the article more closely with regard to your points about 802.1a. Honestly, I am more keen on the protection trigger. So a neighboring 802.11b APs beacons would not cause my APs to go into protection? This is a link-local event, then? What if my AP hears a client association on the same channel on another AP elsewhere? I seem to have heard the latter will trigger protection, but it won't go any farther (i.e. my going into proection will not be contagious; its only triggered if an AP hears client associations).
