    I have not confirmed this but I think you have an Express card slot on the new laptop that is not backward compatible with Cardbus adapters. I suffered this with my new Dell laptop.

    You can get a Cardbus to USB adapter or a Cardbus to Express card adapter that my work. I found one but this is just one example:
