VoIP over WiFi

  • While it is true that VoIP packets are generated every 20ms, when a Wi-Fi version of the frame is transmitted, not ACK'd, then retransmitted again, it *might* still be within the 20ms window. Even though retries at the 802.11 MAC layer are pretty darn quick, but that transmitting station has to do the entire contention window again, and compete with all other stations/APs that want to transmit on the same channel.

This may/may not induce a dropped VoIP frame at the UDP layer.

A percent retry rate might/should be higher than the UDP loss rate. It will change quite a bit based on the load of all the APs and Stations on that specific frequency at the exact time of the VoIP frame.
