In olden times they knew that the sun emitted rays and believed that some sort of medium was necessary for electromagnetic signals to propagate. [ We now know this is not true ]. They gave the term ???¡é?¡é?????¡­?¡°ether???¡é?¡é???????? to this imaginary medium.

This is where Bob Metcalfe picked up the term when he formulated the ???¡é?¡é?????¡­?¡°ETHERnet???¡é?¡é???????? that we all know.
