  • I agree with Wlanman. Just took a look through the 802.11-2007 doc. There is a section at the beginning called "Abreviations and acronyms" and there is a mention of "SSID" but nada on "ESSID".

    Also,in the many diagrams in the spec I couldn't see a single mention of "ESSID".

    ESSID is a term used by many vendors and SSID is the IEEE terminology. In the real world, the terms SSID and ESSID are synonymous.

    A much more important discussion is the difference between the SSID/ESSID and the BSSID.

    The SSID is the LOGICAL identifier of a WLAN and the BSSID is the Layer 2 identifier of a WLAN operating as a basic service set.

    It gets even crazier when you mix in virtual BSSIDs and multiple WLANs which can also exist within the same physical area and within the same contention domain.
