There is an IEEE document named IEEE 802.1X-2004, also known as the current revision of IEEE 802.1X. It is not an amendment. It is a self contained (stand alone) standard. There is no IEEE document or standard named IEEE 802.1x. This is a common but mistaken way of referring to the current revision of IEEE 802.1X.
