An Extended Service Set is two or more AP's with the same SSID (usually in a given area, most of the time with coverage overlap). So for a network that has multiple AP's with the same SSID, the ESSID and the SSID is the same thing.

I did do a search in the 802.11 standard and ESSID is not specified, although it is a common term these days.
