It would seem you friends test really isn't a good test of responsiveness, not to mention its unlikely to happen in the real world. As the AP would have to break the 64k packet apart anyway to forward it all you are really doing is creating one very large packet. I would say the linksys firmware is configured to just reject 64k packets as a way of handling them. That's one way to do it, maybe not the best, but then this kind of test really doesn't reflect a real world scenario. If you really want to test throughput I would suggest downloading iPerf and installing it on both of your clients to test what throughput you are getting.
