Disabling Protection while still having 11b enabled

Looks like to me you understand the issue very well. You're right in that sometimes the solution can be worse than the problem - not always of course. I haven't seen any settings in the Cisco AP-1200 series that would allow you to disable protection mechanisms without simply disabling the .11b data rates.
The linksys AP you have has a specific checkbox (or other manner of configuration) that lets you enable/disable protection mechanisms altogether without disabling 1, 2, 5.5, and 11 Mbps data rates? If so, have you checked the supported rates IE in a beacon originating from that AP after disabling protection?
